Openoffice, with Microsoft Office 2007 compatability!

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

At last, Openoffice now can render Office 2007 documents! Now I dont have to ask people to re-export XLSX documents when they send them to me! The new Ubuntu release (Gutsy Gibbon) has this version bundled, for others, check out Openoffice.org .

So now I can run my games, edit/read/save MS Office 2007 documents, run a good chunk of propriatry software thanks to Wine. Am I missing something here? Or am I Windows free and not loosing a bit of productivity?

Faster, better, smarter?!?

Monday, October 22nd, 2007

With over 500,000 hits since I started Sigmundvoid of which I didn’t think I would ever get I thought it was time to upgrade the server that runs it. Since the base system is Fedora Core 4 I realize how spoilt I am using apt-get compared to the idiosyncrasies of yum, oh well no problem….

Damn that page loads slow!
Agreed! So for grins I threw out Apache, I have heard so much about Lighttpd I thought I`d give it a whirl. Lighttpd aims to keep a small footprint while offering all the core functions that you expect a http server to have.

Lighttpd was a dream to install, yum actually installed it just fine for me, it took 2 minutes to configure it to use php and point it to my server root and viola! I see Lighttpd as the Postfix of the MTA`s, since Sendmail was horrid to configure, then Postfix came along with a readable, understandable configuration file system. Apache can also be abeast to configure, nice to see Lighttpd authors realized that configuring a http server doesnt have to be complex.

Spamtastic!
Comment spam is just horrendous, the image/word entry system clearly wasn’t working to fend off the spambots, so I installed a few plugins to stop the morons who insist on comment spamming.

Sezwho
A neat idea, to be able to globally rank peoples comments, yet it was dogging the page load, for now I have removed it, I will need to pop a note to Karl at AsktheAdmin.com since I remember he had the same issue, but for now its off.. Jitendra from Sezwho jumped right on this (Check the comments), eventually I found out that its nothing to do with Sezwho, it was my own fault, I tested it while Apache was running thinking that Lighttpd was running instead. I knew Apache had issues on my server which was the major reason for the switch.

Thanks Jitendra!!!!

General house cleaning.
I also removed a lot of services which are not needed, placed a DNS cache in and other little additions. Hope this helps page delivery performance!!!

One quick note, my dear wife has started her own blog! Check it out here

Acer, no Linux desktop for you Brits!

Tuesday, August 7th, 2007

Seems that Acer doesn’t feel that there is any call for Acer desktops with Linux on them for UK customers, more market share for Dell then:) Kind of funny that the news of Acer not providing their Linux desktop solution to UK customers before Dell saying they are going to provide thier desktop solution to UK customers.

I wonder now if Acer realizes that Dell maybe onto something, after their announcement they must be kicking themselves, or firing their market research team, its not like they can revoke what they said, how on earth can they say there is no call for a desktop with Linux pre-installed on them? I just cant see the logic..

Good luck to Dell on this one, I am sure its going to pay off and a big English trifle in the face of Acer for letting their UK customers down.

For more info, check out Zdnets report on this.

KDE 4.0 Beta release

Friday, August 3rd, 2007

Come and get it, the first Beta of KDE 4.0 is ready for your enjoyment, download it
here. The KDE team has really put a lot of work into this release, with GNOME being
a pretty darn and functional desktop KDE has had their work cut out for them.

I used to be an avid fan of KDE but GNOME enticed me to much with its sleek look which
KDE seem to have injected into version 4.

Konsole, KDE`s terminal app has a new feature, it allows you to now look at your history
which is great for the lazy admin, or if you are showing somone the ropes, below is a screen shot.

I plan to install it on a Vmware instance of Ubuntu so I can get the full experience:)

It goes without saying that it wouldnt be a very good option to use this in a production enviroment, but you already knew that:).
